PROJECT: Margate Seafront Regeneration

YEAR: 2011

TYPE: MA Thesis Project

This project follows on from the Urban Place Analysis which aimed to comprehensively survey and document Thanet to build up a strong evidence base to carry out this thesis project. To that effect, this project deals with some of the problems explored in the UPA as well as building on other issues that have been discovered through a more detailed analysis of Margate.

The main thrust of the project is to redefine what Margate is and hopefully play a major part in attracting people to the area to bring much needed regeneration to the town. In simple terms it is a redevelopment of the seaside promenade to create a stronger link between the beach and the town as well as the station and Turner Contemporary gallery. The ambitions of the project are more complex than that and are embedded in a vision for Margate that could become a template for other ailing seaside destinations. The project aims to reinvent the traditional seaside town by bringing it more in tune with the needs of contemporary visitors whilst at the same time providing a year round attraction to boost the current seasonal economy.
