PROJECT: Urban Place Analysis (Thanet)
YEAR: 2010
TYPE: University Project
The Urban Place Analysis is an annual project where students carry out comprehensive survey of a particular territory in the UK. The territory for this year is Thanet in east Kent, which contains the main urban centres of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. In a group the students carry out a desktop study of the area and use this to identify individual interests in the locale which are then incorporated into a group document that can be read as a detailed analysis of the location.
This individual study looks to examine the relationships between family, community and housing and how these issues effect the creation of successful urban spaces in terms of social, cultural and economic performance. The study focuses on the success of the high street as the hub of community life and compares the successes and failures of Broadstairs and Margate using economic performance as the indicator and testing various external community influences that could contribute to wide variance in performance between the two locations.
